What's Hoppening

May has been a busy month for the IKS and all of it's volunteers. It has been warm enough that we have started the fans and water misters to keep the roos cool. The clover, alfalfa and timothy have really sprung to life after the rains we have experienced this month. This is exciting for the roos as they are tired of the dry hay they have been eating all winter.

We would like to thank our U.S. Congressman, Dave Hobson, for stopping in for a "Roo Visit". He and his staff dropped by to see what we do at the International Kangaroo Society. We had the opportunity to share information about the mission of IKS, particularly rescue and rehabilitation. It was a great visit and we look forward to working with him in the future.

This month also saw the addition of a new "AmbassadoRoo" at IKS, Taylor. Taylor is a 6 month old male Wallaroo. He is about 2 pounds with short dark fur, a pretty face, and a wonderful personality. Taylor is still taking a bottle about every 2-3 hours so he spends much of his time curled up in his pouch sleeping. When he sticks his tiny head from the pouch and you see his black pearl eyes and his long dark eyelashes, it is easy to become entranced. He has already stolen the hearts of many students and teachers alike.

Chloe Roo is another recent addition to the AmbassadoRoos. Chloe - a female, 10 month old Red Kangaroo - is a real bundle of energy. At this moment, she is lying on her back in the middle of her favorite comforter with all four limbs in the air, rolling from side to side. At about 13 pounds, she is "Miss Independent" but still loves to remind you when it's time for a bottle. She has recently discovered the joy of apple branches and leaves and really loves to go to the "Outback" to run with the "big roos". As with Skippy before her, she too has been easy to potty train on the Wall Street Journal.

IKS Educational Programs

Travel is the word of the month for May. Tammie and the AmbassadoRoos have been all over Central Ohio this month. It has been great to make many new acquaintances. It is nice to know that the kangaroos have sooo many friends, children and adults alike.

We have recently had the opportunity to visit with many of you through the on-going educational programs at IKS. Most recently we have visited the following:

  • Columbus Montessori School
  • Garfield Elementary
  • Monterey Elementary
  • First Community Village Health Care
  • Canal Winchester Lions Club
  • Lanfare Care Center
  • Main Street Terrace Care Center

IKS Rescue and Rehab

It is that time of year when little joeys are popping out of pouches and we have been getting calls from concerned owners with a variety of macropod questions. It is terrific to meet new people in the macropod industry and to hear their many stories.

Recently, a Red Neck Wallaby (Bennet's Wallaby) was presented to IKS from an individual who had never raised wallabies before. The wallaby was in a crate, very frightened and unapproachable. We offered to keep the 6 pound joey for a few days to try to calm her down.

The intitial task was to get her into one of our spare pouches to reduce her stress level. After about four days, we were able to return her to her owner as a calm, sweet, playful joey. We received a call a couple of days later telling us how pleased they have been with this little wallaby. They now have an animal they can properly raise and handle.
